The Penderwicks!
Jeanne Birdsall is a wonderful author who has written three books that really anybody could enjoy. They follow the adventures of four sisters: Rosalind, Skye, Jane, and Batty. They are, in the first book, 12, 11, 10, and 4, respectively.
In the first book, named The Penderwicks, you follow them on their vacation in the Berkshires. They meet a boy called Jeffrey Tifton, who is very nice to them (and loves music), but has a very mean and annoying mother, who wants him to join the military eventually, just like his grandfather. Nobody knows who Jeffrey's father is, and Mrs. Tifton won't talk about him. Meanwhile, Rosalind has a crush on Cagney, the gardener, Skye's getting into all sorts of trouble, Jane's writing a new story, and Batty finds a new fascination with bunnies.
In The Penderwicks on Gardam Street, the girls are back again only in their hometown of Cameron, Massachusetts (which, while not being real, is based on the Massachusetts town of Amherst). First, their Aunt Claire says Mr. Penderwick should start dating. Rosalind and her sisters start the Save-Daddy Plan, where they come up with awful dates for Mr. Penderwick. Rosalind is trying to ignore Tommy Geiger, Skye has to act in a play, Jane is writing another story, and Batty is dealing with a villain called Bug Man.
In the third Penderwicks book, The Penderwicks at Point Mouette, Rosalind is in New Jersey, and Mr. Pen is in England, and Aunt Claire is with the rest of them in Maine. Skye is the OAP (Oldest Available Penderwick), so she is very anxious, Jane has writer's block for the first time, and Batty has a newfound interest in music, and is spending all her time with Jeffrey at the piano next door with their new friend Alec.
